Again, love or hate Only Friends does not matter to me, but I was absolutely obsessed with this kiss for quite awhile because I love the visual metaphor of things heating up between Sand and Ray by having smoke pour out of their mouths around the kiss. Like they were literally smoking hot, and I thought that was cool as fuck.

There are a near infinite number of KingUea kisses that I love with my entire being, but I think what takes the cake for me with this kiss in the bathroom in Episode 9 is the teasing, begging, and nuzzling. Like it just feels so familiar, domestic, and still full of desire and I appreciate that these boys getting together did not decrease their sex drive over time like a lot of BLs tend to do.

I love boys that simp for their boyfriends, and though King and Uea are not officially boyfriends yet, these little moments, the little kisses and stuff really make King's interest in Uea feel real, and it's cute as fuck. I also love that Uea mirrors this kiss near the end of the show.

I also love the forehead kiss that Uea gives King during the pet play scene in Episode 6. I don't know why but it just feels almost sacred in a way, similarly to the Ep 4 kiss, the smaller quick kisses feel like something beyond just a casual hook up or friends with benefits situation. Now, we should know King has been interested in Uea for year, but he really starts leaning in to that around the time that I'm pretty sure Uea's feelings for King really start to solidify, and coming out of that pet play scene, these two are ready to be boyfriends. So I just love that little moment

And Ep 9 I love the forehead kiss that King plants on Uea after his stepfather is arrested. I just love Uea resting his head on King's shoulder, and King running his thumb across Uea's knee to comfort him, it feels domestic.

ok. here’s some of my immediate, rambly reactions to eps 3 and 4 of t8s.

first off, i was kinda nervous the entire day. it’s been a while since ive had butterflies like this waiting for a show to air, most recently was the second season of utsukushii kare, but the level it was today was rivalling waiting on a friday for a new bad buddy ep. and the fact this show managed to put me into that state within less than a week is frankly insane, and shows just how down bad i am for it. all that to say, i so soooooo didnt this want this to be a case of me overinflating how good those first 2 eps only for the follow up to not encapsulate the same feelings. all signs were pointing to that not being the case, but still, when you hyperfixate, you kinda get nervous hoping that thing lives up to everything youve built it up to be. and these eps absolutely did that. they didnt just live up to expectations, but are managing to give me scenes and story beats and emotions i just cant predict at this point, and i love that. just how like this budding relationship feels new and unpredictable to jihyun and jaewon, the show is like that for me to watch, and it does wonders for giving me the same butterflies the two are feeling.

but with that unpredictability comes a kind of uncertainty, not knowing whats gonna happen at any turn, and i cant express how much i adore that about these two eps. with the kind of story theyre building, with jaewon’s mental health struggles and his past, with jihyuns nerves and growth in an unfamiliar environment, itd be so easy to make their relationship a shared place of comfort and certainty and familiarity for each other. that place of refuge. and while i feel like that’s what it’ll eventually become, i love that still, in these early stages, the relationship feels so uncertain and almost not guaranteed. it makes you still hang onto every look and touch and word even though theyve already kissed. something about it doesnt feel pre-determined, which is a feeling i get with so many other bl’s when you know, a majority of the time, they’ll get together and have a happy ending. that doesnt feel guaranteed here (even though i pray for that to be the case). instead, it feels like im watching two individuals that are actually having to make a conscious effort in order for this relationship to become something. they have to work for that certainty. and that kind of knife’s edge, it could break at any moment, hanging on every interaction is packed with that specific kind of nervous exhilaration that is so fucking accurate and true to the start of relationship. i seriously cant describe how perfectly they managed to encapsulate that feeling and convey it with such authenticity. its actually ridiculous. seeing those moments, when they’re talking and skirting so closely around the topic of what exactly they are, when then their fingers brush and you are begging for one of them to make the tiniest of moves, to take hold, to make that kind of a statement no matter how small or silent it is, it makes your heart race, bc its new and unknown and in that moment its like your insides are screaming, begging you to embed this sensation into your veins bc you dont know when the next night like this, when the midnight chill and the dusky sky and the hints of alcohol in your system will mix right and make you feel so hedonistically giddy as you do right now at the feeling of that person by your side. and the way they both chase that sensation, how visibly happy it makes them, a craving for each other and that shared thrill only they know, it is just so unbelievably intoxicating to watch. 

i am a person that struggles to sit down and focus. im watching tv but im also knitting, im playing a game but also listening to a podcast. im that person that has to overwhelm my senses to feel sated. this is the first time in a while that ive sat down to watch something and nothing stole my focus, i wasnt distracted, my mind didnt wander. i wasnt concious of the other people walking around my house or the traffic outside or the temperature of the room, i was just fully engrossed. i let every ebb and flow of the scenes and story take me on this path it was guiding me down. and again, thats how they feel. when jihyun and jaewon are alone together, everything else fades away to this dull buzz of background nothingness, they become engrossed in each other, and just as the story pulls me, they pull each other. there’s a constant back and forth, an exchange of setting and challenging boundaries that i adore. when youre getting into a scene, you dont know whos gonna be the one pushing the other. you have jihyun being more forward by the han river, teaching jaewon to draw, then you have jaewon going after jihyun at the library, you have him meeting jihyun after work only for jihyun to ask him to stay and have a drink. its like with every interaction, theyre both asking ‘is this ok?’ and the other asks ‘can we go further?’. i wanna make a whole other post about the nature of their gap in age and experience and all that brings and also how the expectations it brings are subverted, but for now i just wanna say how great it is that there is this balance, and especially that jihyun is allowed to be confident and brave and forward with jaewon, and jaewon is allowed to be reserved and giddy around jihyun. those are experiences so often reserved for the elder and the younger in a relationship, respectively, so to let jihyun be the leader and jaewon the follower, swept up by his feelings and attraction is so refreshing and plays so well into the kind of growth we’re gonna see from these characters and that they need, jihyun growing out of this shy country mouse persona to be more forward and bold, and jaewon being allowed to drop his mask of bravado and letting him be a young person that doesn’t have to be in control of everything. we see that one of his main pressures is the concept of the future, of how simultaneously wide and full of possibilities but also narrow and predetermined that future is for him. he talks about being afraid to lose the comfort of a microcosm like the army of school, even though they are places where he isnt necessarily happy. and then in comes jihyun, something not predetermined, something unexpected, and he takes control of jaewons future in a way by opening up this new path for him. he’s taking some of that stress from jaewon’s shoulders by being an equal and responsive partner in this journey, and offers the chance for jaewon to have something certain in his future, only if he too will work for it. only too if he tries something new, realises that its not too late, and that the anxiety and fear and uncertainty that comes with it may be worth it. bc it may not be guaranteed, but to try instead of never knowing is the only way he can make this possible.

tldr; this show is breath-taking, and im gonna be emo about it for a very long time

i was hoping this ep would finally get people to see topmew for what they are but instead i'm baffled by all the "top and mew were both playing eachother but then caught feelings along the way" takes i'm seeing. based on what? top calling mew interesting and saying he wanted to date him all the way back in ep 2? and don't get me started on people acting like mew was doing something sinister by simply wanting to get to know top before sleeping with him. 10/16/2024 updates:

So study activities I've been doing lately are: glossika sentences, and listening to chinese audiobooks and ausiodramas.

With the goal of hopefully increasing common words I know in Japanese to 3000-5000 (I'm nit sure how many words glossika japanese has... it claims 5000 words and 6400 sentences so hopefully I'll see close to 5000 words, I already knew around 2000 words so I am hoping another few thousand will help my comprehension of shows and stuff). And for Chinese, with the goal of increasing my listening comprehension (which to be honest is going to just take many hours... I expect a few hundred or more. I have the vocabulary from reading, I just need to turn it into vocabulary I can quickly-recall-and-understand when listening).

Optional activities: trying Comprehensible Input type lessons, and seeing how that goes. As usual, I did not stick to my plan lol. I planned to focus on Japanese Comprehensible Input, which would be a better test of the improvements I can make using such lessons. Instead I found myself focusing on Chinese Comprehensible Input Lessons.

Notes:

Glossika japanese course: I've studied 79 hours with between 1-4 hours a week, pitifully small. I was aiming for 1-2 hours a day but lol I'm going to need to step it up to get closer to that. The thing too is? Audio flashcards of english/japanese sentences like glossika are some of the EASIEST study resources to do while multitasking and walking, cleaning, playing video games, working, driving, etc. So I should definitely be able to push the study time to 2 hours just by pressing play when work starts and playing glossika's audio when I'm not doing something focus intensive. Anyway... I need to put more time in. I've gone through 3818 sentences, 26550 reps, and I'd say a vast majority of the words so far have been words I knew. Real rough estimate that only 500-1000 words were new to me, and even of those I've probably seen them im video games before or looked them up while playing a game or readong before. Very daily life vocabulary and sentence types.

Sareta (done? Was done? Have done? And saremashita (was done) are the main words I'm having major trouble grasping the meaning of. I know the word in that I've studied it on purpose for multiple years now, I just don't get what it's conveying. Its a form of suruI think but. Is it conveying "could do" or "done to X by something else" or "happened to X" I'm still quite confused even with the grammar explanations I've read... so I guess off to read even more grammar explanations. Also the masen form of verbs for "you must" instead of you must not. Example: You must go there そこに行かなければなりません。there to (there) ika(go)nakereba(must? Literally If Not)narimasen(not become?)... Go There if not not become -> go there to become (change to correct status accordingly)... it's seems like a double negative with nakerebanarimasen and the double negative confuses me a ton. そこに行かなければならない nakerebanaranai (informal version)

Compare with this example of You must NOT go there: そこへ行ってはいけない soko he (there to) itte (go) wa ikenai (don't go - just the verb conjugated for not doing it). I hipe with enough repetition I'll eventually get this...

Chinese audios: hahahaha.... in my defense, October is my rest month of little work. I listened to 5 hours so far this week. Some bl audiobook on bilibili I was recommended, crime of course so I could follow plot okay (it has good music), SCI mystery beginning a bit, Alice in Wonderland read by a girl on youtube (which I feel really helped as I know every word so it helps me just HEAR better), MoDu first few chapters again, and an audiodrama I started yesterday which had chinese subs... so I was cheating... but with chinese subs I understood everything immediately which was a nice switch up compared to the other practice... its called 提灯看刺刀 and audiodramas are wild in some ways because if you've never read a corresponding book you're still guessing the premise and settings lol but it appeared Han (rich boy police maybe?) and Chu Yi were enemies, Chu Yi was in hospital dying and woke up and Han asked if he ever loved anyone Shen said no and stabbed himself! And I think it's about to be a redo your life plot! I only listened to the intro so far. I need to listen more to their names because I'm still catching those. I recommend it though, its a well made audio drama.

If you ever want a push to immerse in chinese more, make a bilibili account. They have an app and site, its like youtube. And if you, like me, search BL and danmei initially, then it gets to a point where bilibili will recommend you stuff you'll like every time you open the app. I usually see several audiobooks and dramas recommended when I open the app, some crime audiobooks and audio dramas, some dangai animated manhua with the sound effects, some comedy supernatural animated manhua, some newly airing japanese drama BL with chinese subs, and some new reactions to shows that have come out recently that are dangai or danmei. I tend to look up japanese stuff on bilibili too, so I can usually see new bl jdramas and chinese audiobook and audiodramas when I open the app. It makes the question of "what to immerse in" quite simple. If I dont know what to listen to in chinese, I just open bilibili and click something. If Im lazy that day, I pick an animated manhua with audio and the text on screen. If I want just dialogue I click an audiodrama (usually 1-12 hours), and if I want a lot of practice and details of whats going on I click an audiobook.

I am eternally grateful that my brain doesnt seem to discard "skills needed to read" very much at all. No matter if I take a break or not, a few to several hours of trying to read and it comes back. I have a book of Grimms Fairy Tales in Chinese. When I read the Frog Prince, story 1 in the book, it took me 20 minutes despite being 3 pages. When I read story 2 the next day, Red Riding Hood, I could read it at speaking speed and read it aloud because I knew how to pronounce every hanzi again except for the 2 hanzi before the type of wine Red Riding Hood brought for grandma, and the hanzi for door latch 闩 (shuan1). I knew it meant door latch from context but I'd never seen or heard it before so I've just looked up the pronunciation now. So reading took 2 days to come back, and I can read audiodrama chinese subs at speaking speed fine again. I'm super grateful for many reasons, just one being that having this locked in memory of hanzi meanings and a decent amount of their pronunciations (at least enough to attach to the sound radical to help sound out words), means when I do jump back into reading I get all that back quickly. It was hard to initially study hanzi so I am glad the knowledge doesnt deteriorate. It would suck to forget 1000+ hanzi if you take too long a break. I do forget a few hundred hanzi, temporarily, if they were hanzi I was learning in reading but stopped reading before I solidified them in memory, but the knowledge of them comes back and keeps solidifying at the stage it was before once I do read again. The process for Chinese reading skill has been quite similar to french reading skill - barely deteriorating and the skill comes back upon reading again for several hours. I'd say if anything, the listeming study in combo with reading really helps me remember words. I remember better with sound, I think. So mentally if I can't sound out vaguely familiar words I get slowed down when reading. It'll bug me too much that I cant remember the pronunciation. I can read fast enough to have no internal voice, but with words I know it goes much smoother if I know the words pronunciation and not just its visual (I learned a heap of words visual only no pronunciation when I started reading a lot). I connected sound to hanzi very heavily, the sound component in many hanzi helps me a Ton its like im sounding out words in english as well as looking at other component clues for meaning (again - like in english, i look for context in chinese sentences to guess new stuff). When listening only, i find I cant picture the hanzi though... only pinyin if i want to look a word up, or if i know the word i hear then i dont visualize anything I just Understand and move on.

The extra stuff:

I am watching Doraemon in japanese on youtube. I only watched 1 episode, very understandable, I recommend for upper beginners. Doraemon is also in mandarin dub on youtube just search duolaameng, also very beginner friendly.

I watched half of Dont Close Your Eyes Before Its Dark on youtube, a taiwan drama, I could do it without intense focus but the taiwan accent plus low volume of the show meant I only caught the main plot points and missed many little conversation details (in contrast I understand Qi Hun cdrama like 95% of every word). I am watching with no chinese subs.

So I switched to a show called Detention on netflix, also taiwan drama I think, there's a guy student who I think speaks a different dialect or language with his dad because those scenes have built in traditional chinese subs and some words they say sound like words I know while others dont. The girl and her mom and most of the students and faculty speak mandarin, and the guy student does at school. It's a horror, also much less dialogue than Qi Hun cdrama. But it was cool to see I could follow the plot well, it feels like when I watch an english horror show with no subtitles. Audio is clearer and louder in this show Detention than the first one I tried. Also its an interesting show, I recommend. It makes me want to go back and finish watching The Bad Kids, similar vibe in some ways except this is more supernatural. Yes, I love horror. Romantic comedies would be easier practice though, and with more dialogue. Im not watching a xianxia because while I know they talk a lot more (and I miss Ice Fantasy), the voices tend to be clearer in xianxia than in stuff shot like real life. You know what I mean, in Detention and Close Your Eyes people mumble and slur and talk muffled sometimes, same in Qi Hun where Shi Guang talks more like a real person and less clearly. I'd rather practice hearing something closer to how actual conversations sound, since I'm getting very clear spoken audio from audiobooks and audio dramas. I watched 2 episodes of Detention so far.

I watched 1 episode of Inuyasha in japanese. The positive: I followed the plot fine and without intense effort. The negative: I understood only like 20 words total. Theres way more unknown words in Inuyasha for me, compared to Ranma 1/2 (where I know maybe 70% of the words) or Doraemon (where I know 90% or more). So I am not sure if watching would have much benefit. I do understand the episode story beats, so maybe Id pick things up from context? But I know so few words I'm hearing. Also I missed inuyasha, I would love to retwatch. The art is prettier than I remember as a kid. Ranma 1/2 is one of my favorite animes, and I like rumikos other stuff too.

I watched like 10 Lazy Chinese Comprehensible Input videos on youtube yesterday, all on the Intermediate Playlist. I love that channel! I think the intermediate section is amazing. I know every word almost, and she explains particular new words like specific noodle dishes. She shows hanzi if I want to look at the screen and match pronunciation to the words. She speaks slow and clear, but also in an animated cheerful pleasant way so its not boring, and it does feel like being a child a bit and having a pleasant person helping to explain things to you and entertain you with their stories. The clear pronunciation helps me know more clearly what word Im hearing. I can listen to stuff above this level, but I saw someone on reddit mention they listened to the Lazy Chinese channel and then saw a huge listening comprehension boost, and then listened to Tea Time Chinese and got another boost. As I want improved listenimg skill, Im copying them lol. I can understand the Intermediate playlist without looking at the video, so its easier to play in the background. Its also a lot of everyday conversation topics, which is useful to me as novels and shows dont actually cover those mundane topics as much lol. So I think it might help strengthen my foundation of listening skill. I also just think the lessons are amazing for learners in general: lots of repetition, spoken in an entertaining and visually explained way, and even the more advanced stuff is quite understandable and interesting (which is what I used to watch once in a while). If you want to study Chinese with comprehensible input lessons, I 100% recommend going to Lazy Chinese and starting.

I also listened to Alice in Wonderland in chinese read on youtube, as I mentioned above in my study notes. I know most of the words so its more an exercise of practicing quickly recognizing words, with no new word guessing or parsing to slow me down and take up part of my energy like it does with other audiobooks of bigger novels. The reader I found is a girl who speaks softer and higher than Im used to, which I suppose is good practice. But she also reads in a way that reminds me of the way my parents used to read to me, which is comforting in a way, like someone telling you an interesting tale of something that happened somewhere, to entertain you. I listened to Alice in Wonderland maybe 2 years ago in chinese and it was nowhere near this understandable, so my listening skill has gradually improved since then.

I was trying to prioritize watching Comprehensible Japanese youtube channel but. Lol you know me! I avoid often doing what I planned. I watched 6 videos... the absolute beginner videos felt too easy but did have useful vocabulary, the lower intermediate videos explaining comics felt better for my level, but required me to focus enough to feel tired. I could follow the advanced fukushima disaster topic video but that made me feel Very exhausted within a few minutes. I find lets plays of video games I've played before are less exhausting than the Comprehensible Japanese intermediate videos (probably because i know more words from those specific games since I learned some vocab from them), and I find the beginner videos are not exhausting but theyre very boring to me. Thats shy I went looking for a japanese show to watch... something to immerse and pick up words in, that is not boring but not exhausting... not much luck, japanese shows are too hard. They also require intense focus.

So Sanrio boys is an average highschool slice of life not-bl-but-almost for likely female audiences with pretty avrage to good character writing and passable animation. It's really nothing to write home about- very similar to any other raising sim mobile game anime adaptation.

But the cold open is God to me. Nothing will beat the comedy of 'Sanrio Millitary Academy' to me, absolutely nothing. I was genuinely disapponted i wasnt getting a B teir fantasy drama and instead a B teir highschool drama, because of the sheer gap between the grim politics and sweet sanrio vibes.

i am enjoying this game sooo much and lowkey i just realized its actually a kinetic novel since there's no choices. but anyways thoughts and spoilers under the cut

man idek where to start but this chapter was so good. loved the gender fuckery of isshiki and his entire character hes definitely in the favs list along with kozuka. to be honest i kind of love everybody in this game i dont think theres a single character i dislike

I think a lot of people don't really look up the meaning of "otome", because i didn't even know that it had an overall definition, I didn't even know what an otoge game was untill you brought it to my attention. Because, truthfully, I thought otome was just a unbrella term dating.

Because we have games like The Acrane and Obey Me! That fall under otome when they do have Male MC, Female MC, even Non-binary MC. So personally, why should it matter if a guy likes an otome game? Would it matter if he selfships himself with fake anime men? Because thats what most of my fan fics are, they are Fan fiction for a reason.

I mean, there is alot of BL games that woman play and create fan fics aswell.

I'm not trying to say that "oh if you don't like Male x male you're homophobic" I think what would make it homophobic is when you are being very derogatory.

I. i don't like the way my sisters husband (and she herself too) restrict my nieces usage of media and the internet in general. the day before yesterday she asked me whether i could give her extra lessons in english because she failed her exam and needs to pass in order to be able to attend the next grade. and i wholeheartedly believe that she wouldn't have failed her exam if her parents would have allowed her to browse the web where she be confronted with english pretty much everywhere. or even play games! my other niece and nephew learned english by playing minecraft! i personally learned english by watching pewdiepie and scrolling through tumblr. besides we're not living in the 90s anymore where the internet was just a nice thing to have, we are living in the 20s of the 21st century and people rely on the internet a lot more and incorporate it more into daily activities! how do they think she will manage in the future? she once came to me because she didn't even have a clue on how to make a powerpoint. i mean yeah at her age i didn't know how to make complex and pretty looking ones either, but most could do a simple one: black text on white slides, consisting of either way too many bullet notes or walls of text. it's so frustrating. also i gave her my phone number and told her to please read the books that i gave her and if she needed any help to ask me. and she still didn't text me. girl, i know you are struggling i tested you two days ago and skfkskdksks anyways. i hope she will pass despite her parents being too restrictive. i'm pretty sure my niece in 2nd grade knows more on how to navigate media.

II. recently i was talking about bl and gl anime and manga with my friend from university, but i was so tired that day that i couldn't properly explain myself. and since i had a small breakdown over it at breakfast earlier i will try to explain myself now. it's not that i don't like to watch anime or read manga (i wish there would be a word like kana, hiragana&katakana but for anime&manga) that have bl/gl couples inside, it's just that i don't like it when shows are reduced to just that when they have a complex story or at best an entertaining one. i also don't like joining fandoms anymore for the very same reason, because everywhere you go there are only ships, and while it's fun to indulge yourself sometimes i'm not that big of a fan of it anymore; i used to be but nowadays i prefer to watch the series and discuss the lore or characters. another reason why i don't like to watch bl/gl anime is because more than not it's bl, and even more often than not they aren't even canon, which usually leads to the creation of a fandom that solely builds its likes and dislikes on fetishes. sometimes it's not even the fandom per se, sometimes it's the mentality of so many people that see two guys hugging each other and immediately stamping them off as gay. people however do not do the same to girls. this just shows how messed up some beliefs still are. i would like to enjoy series without being shoved pornographic art or written work in my face that scream 'i don't care about the series i'm a porn addict that found a bl ship and will not use it to let my mind go wild', good for u, but i personally don't want to engage with that. at least make it worthwhile and have an interesting plot. when im watching or reading a shounen or seinen im there for the series, not the ships, it's just so tiring for me. if there is some bl romance involved (eg banana fish) i don't mind, i like it, too. but again, more often than not those series get reduced to traumatic romances and people forget the rest. i'm back. anyways. continuing. not every series will obviously be about romance which is why it's of course not necessary that relationships are explicitly made canon. i'm fine with that, but i don't like bait. and yes i do think of many things as bait. i don't care if japan has a different society and culture because YoI was still published and the relationship between yuri and viktor has been so wonderfully displayed and showed even without direct kisses or proclamations of love. i'm just not the biggest fan when a series has a male cast only and fans reduce it to: yeah they're all gay. all of them. they fuck and friendships suddenly aren't a thing anymore. i'm the embodiment of yes i'm gay yes i'm homophobic. that's that. during the discussion with my friend i brought up LOTR because i had no clue that people even shipped sam/frodo or aragorn/legolas until i dipped my toe in the fandom. and then i ran. aragorn has the most gorgeous wife so, no. and sam and frodo wouldn't have been shipped as much if they were female. let's be honest, people ship them because they are male. even in fetishes women or female presenting people are not welcome. i'm not crying about it btw i'm glad gl isn't fetishized to the point where it's uncomfortable, it's usually very childish sjfksksks. i'm simply putting it in perspective. and that's where i will draw the line, and my conclusion is: i will watch the great pretender but i doubt i will see anything more than two guys that are close.
